New York Mills Arts Retreat

There are presently no open calls for submissions.

Two application deadlines yearly: Oct 1 and April 1.  FOR APPLICATION INFORMATION VISIT:https://www.kulcher.org/programs/artist-retreat/

When the Cultural Center was founded in 1990, its name was “The New York Mills Arts Retreat.”  This artist retreat and residency program remains central to the mission, purpose, values, and vision of the Center today.

Artists from all disciplines (visual, performance, written, audio and visual media) will be considered for a residency, which provides stays of two to six weeks at NO COST for room (solo occupancy  of a one-bedroom house and access to studio space in our Cultural  Center).

There is just one artist at a time here on residency, which  supports our focus on providing virtually uninterrupted time for  creative development and  exploration. The artist provides her or his own transportation and  board. There is no stipend.  While the art residency program is focused on allowing the artist free time and space to produce their art, it will be expected that the artist will want to present a short workshop, presentation, or attend an open gallery night during their time in New York Mills.

In the application, please prioritize showcasing your artwork for the selection committee (who is made up of local practicing artists, not professors or paid staff), and avoid unnecessary rhetoric in your artist statement and plan of work descriptions. Residencies are awarded to artists based on the following criteria:

  • Artistic Merit (60%): skill, creativity, content, beauty
  • Commitment to the Arts (20%): exhibit/performance history, memberships, boards, volunteerism, full- or part-time artist, art profession level
  • Other (20%): supporting materials, presentation, enthusiasm, application completion
